Australian rooftop solar sets a new record in 2022, according to a report by Clean Energy Australia

Australia’s rooftop solar sector grew strongly in 2022, with over 310,000 new systems installed, according to the latest Clean Energy Australia Report. This represents a new record for rooftop solar installations in Australia, adding nearly the same capacity as the Eraring Power Station in New South Wales.

The Clean Energy Council Chief Executive, Kane Thornton, said that rooftop solar is “playing a massive role in decarbonising the Australian energy grid and putting us on the path to 82 per cent renewable energy by 2030.”

Thornton also noted that the rooftop solar industry showed its resilience in 2022 despite facing several challenges, such as higher polysilicon prices, reduced subsidies, and supply chain issues.

The Clean Energy Australia Report also found that the average solar system size continues to increase, with the average system now being 8.84 kW. This suggests homeowners and businesses are becoming more ambitious in their solar installations.

The report also found that over 50,000 household battery systems were installed in 2022. This is a significant increase from the previous year and suggests that people are increasingly interested in storing their solar energy for later use.

AEMO: The National Electricity Market achieved a low demand record

On 17 September 2023, according to the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), the National Electricity Market (NEM) recorded a record-low demand of 11,393 MW, 4.2% lower than the previous record from the previous spring (Nov 2022). 57% of the total electricity supply in the NEM came from rooftop and grid-scale solar.

South Australia: A global leader in rooftop solar adoption

AEMO report also found that South Australia has emerged as a global leader in rooftop solar adoption, with over 40% of households now equipped with solar panels. This remarkable transformation has been driven by government incentives, a favourable climate, environmental awareness, and declining solar panel costs.

The impact of rooftop solar on South Australia’s energy landscape has been profound. Rooftop solar accounts for over 20% of the state’s electricity generation, reducing reliance on traditional fossil fuel sources and greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, rooftop solar has helped flatten the demand curve and bolster the state’s energy security.

While South Australia’s rooftop solar revolution has been a resounding success, it has been challenging. The intermittent nature of solar power generation can strain the grid, and the state has experienced grid stability issues due to a high reliance on renewables. However, South Australia is addressing these challenges through investments in grid infrastructure, smart grid technologies, and battery storage.
