Battery electric vehicles accounted for 8.8% of June sales
Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 8.8% of June sales and for 7.4% of new vehicle sales in the first half of 2023. A significant rise from the 1.8 per cent reported during the same period last year and 7.7% of the BEV market in May. Among the electric vehicles sold, approximately 60 per cent were Teslas, making the American electric car manufacturer the dominant player in the Australian market. Tesla has already surpassed its full-year 2022 delivery record in the first half of 2023. In comparison to the second half of 2022, Tesla sales have seen a 71 per cent increase so far this year.

Tesla Model Y as the best selling EV in Australia for the first half of 2023
The Tesla Model Y SUV emerged as the best-selling electric vehicle in Australia during the first half of 2023, with 14,002 units delivered. It surpassed the Tesla Model 3 sedan, which held the lead until last month, with 11,575 deliveries reported. The record-breaking month for Tesla included 5,560 Model Y deliveries, contributing to a total of 7,018 sales, a remarkable achievement for the company.
Outside of Tesla, the best-selling non-Tesla electric vehicle in Australia during this period was the BYD Atto 3 small SUV from China, with 6,196 units sold. This figure was more than three times the sales of its closest competitor, the MG ZS EV small SUV, which reported 1,787 deliveries.
Rounding out the top ten best-selling electric vehicles in Australia were the Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric (1,596 sales), Polestar 2 (1,147), Volvo C40 (685), Kia EV6 (535), BMW iX (517), and Hyundai Ioniq 5 (448).
