What is Origin Loop VPP?
Origin Loop VPP is a program offered by Origin Energy, one of Australia’s largest electricity retailers and solar installers. Origin Loop VPP stands for Virtual Power Plant, which means a network of distributed energy resources, such as solar batteries, that can be controlled and coordinated by a central operator.

How does Origin Loop VPP work?
To join Origin Loop VPP, you must have a compatible battery inverter installed at your home and an operational solar system of at least 5kW capacity. You also need to have a continuous and reliable internet connection and an active Origin Energy electricity plan. Once you enrol in Origin Loop VPP, you will receive a $400 credit on your Origin electricity bill. You can also monitor your home energy use and solar self-sufficiency via the Origin app. The app will show you how much energy you generate, consume, store, and export and how much you save and earn from your solar system and battery.
From time to time, Origin will notify you via the app or SMS to let you know that a Loop event is about to start. A Loop event is when Origin will extract energy from your battery and send it to the grid to help balance supply and demand. A Loop event can last from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on the grid conditions and the availability of other energy sources.
During a Loop event, you will receive $1/kWh for the energy exported from your battery, much higher than the usual feed-in tariff rates. You will also still receive your standard feed-in tariff for any excess solar energy not stored in your battery.
Origin will never take more than 200kWh from your battery annually as part of Origin Loop, so you can always feel in control of your energy usage and savings. And if you change your mind about Origin Loop, you can leave the program at any time, as there are no lock-in contracts.
