Unveiling the record-breaking feat
LONGi Green Energy Technology Co., Ltd. has announced a groundbreaking achievement at Intersolar Europe 2023, one of the world’s largest exhibitions for the solar sector, beginning in Munich, Germany. According to the European Solar Test Installation (ESTI), the company has achieved an impressive 33.5% efficiency for its perovskite/crystalline silicon tandem solar cells based on commercial CZ silicon wafers. This achievement marks a significant improvement of 1.7% over the previous record of 31.8% published at the 16th International Photovoltaic Power Generation and Smart Energy Conference & Exhibition (SNEC) in Shanghai. It currently stands as the second-highest efficiency record in the world, with the potential for further advancements in the future.
LONGi’s success in developing tandem solar cells is a result of extensive research and breakthroughs in key technologies. The company’s R&D team, one of the earliest in China to focus on tandem solar cells, has made significant strides in various areas. These include perovskite thin-film crystal growth on textured silicon substrates, effective bulk passivation, and light management.
Li Zhenguo emphasised the power of photovoltaic power generation is “born from light”
During his speech at Intersolar, Li Zhenguo, the President of LONGi (on the right side of the picture above), highlighted the perpetual theme driving the photovoltaic industry’s development and emphasised that LONGi has been at the forefront of this pursuit by consistently breaking world records for solar cell efficiency.
“Improving cell conversion efficiency and reducing the cost of electricity remain the perpetual theme driving the development of the photovoltaic industry. From April 2021, LONGi has broken the world record for solar cell efficiency 14 times, and currently holds the title of achieving the highest conversion efficiency for silicon solar cells at 26.81%. Since listing in 2012, LONGi has invested over 20 billion yuan (2.5 billion Euros) in R&D and has obtained 2,132 patents of various types.”
Li Zhenguo further emphasised the transformative power of photovoltaic power generation, “The photovoltaic power generation is “born from light” and the light from the sun is just fair to everyone. As a global inclusive energy source, photovoltaic is sending light and well-being to various countries and regions around the world. Over the past decade, because the cost of electricity has dropped by more than 90%, photovoltaic has become the most economical energy type in most countries in the world.”

The "2681”
At the Intersolar event, LONGi showcased its conceptual product “2681”, named after its record-breaking 26.81% efficiency. Weighing 31.8 kg and measuring 2278 mm × 1134 mm, this ultra-high-efficiency product is the result of advanced technology developed in November 2022. Its high-performance capabilities are derived from innovative cell development and include features such as voltage and symmetrical cell structures, enabling power generation of over 600 W.
In addition to the “2681” conceptual product, LONGi also presented its heterojunction module, the “New Tech Conceptual Product,” at Intersolar. This module, designed for distributed scenarios, comprises 54 cells and has a size of 1722 mm × 1134 mm. It boasts a 90% bifacial rate for increased power generation and a temperature coefficient of ~-0.25%/°C, making it highly efficient even in high-temperature environments. With minimal power degradation and almost zero potential-induced degradation (PID), the New Tech Conceptual Product offers excellent product life cycle reliability. These advancements bring LONGi one step closer to achieving mass production of this module.
